Teacher strike averted at Salem-Keizer schools

Salem-Keizer Education Association (SKEA) reached a tentative agreement with Salem-Keizer School District March 26, averting a potential strike.

SKEA represents more than 2,600 teachers in Oregon’s second-largest school district. On March 22, it announced that members passed a strike authorization vote — the first on record for SKEA — with 94% approval.

The tentative agreement includes a 9.75% pay bump over two years, a one-time retention bonus of $6,000 for full-time staff or $3,000 for part-time staff, and a $100 per month increase in the district’s contribution for health insurance.

SKEA started negotiating a new contract in April 2023 and declared an impasse Feb. 15. SKEA members and the school board must ratify the agreement before it takes effect.
