County ballot measure would provide lawyers to tenants facing eviction

Share

Tenants rights advocates are gathering signatures to place a measure on the ballot in Multnomah County that would provide free legal representation to tenants of all income levels who face eviction. Similar programs have recently been set up in New York City, Cleveland, and elsewhere. The Multnomah County program would be funded by a 0.75% tax on capital gains, under the proposed initiative.

The campaign, known as Eviction Representation for All, is so far endorsed by 11 nonprofits and four labor unions: AFSCME Local 88, Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, ILWU Local 5, and National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 82.

To get on the November 2022 ballot, the campaign will have to collect 22,686 valid signatures by July 18.  Find out more about the proposal and the campaign at eratenants.org.
