City employees in Dayton, population 2,700, joined OPEIU Local 11 June 4 by submitting signed union cards to the Oregon Employment Relations Board.
It’s a unit of six workers: a city office administrator, a part-time library assistant, and four water system and sewer treatment plant workers. They work four 10-hour days and trade off being on call the other three days of the week. That schedule means they can’t take on side work to supplement their $19-$22 hourly wages.
OPEIU Local 11 Executive Secretary-treasurer Howard Bell says he understands that like any small city, Dayton has financial constraints.
“We just want them to catch up with the other small towns and cities,” Bell said.
