On March 6, a week after the United States and Israel attacked Iran, the national AFL-CIO issued a statement calling for an end to the conflict. The statement also called for “strict respect for international law, the United Nations Charter and the U.S. Constitution that call for the people’s voice through Congress in any war authorization, including through the War Powers Resolution.”
The labor federation statement followed statements by two of its affiliated national unions: SEIU and National Nurses United, and by unaffiliated United Electrical Workers. SEIU was the first to issue a statement, on the day the war began, denouncing the Trump administration’s “reckless regard for working people’s lives.”
“War hurts working people, poor people, women, and children,” the SEIU statement said. “SEIU stands with workers in Iran and all over the world fighting for better, safer lives.”
