James “Jimbo” Anderson, 63, was elected by acclamation to a fourth three-year term. He and the other officers of Operating Engineers Local 701 took the oath of office Sept. 13 in a ceremony administered by the union’s general president John Downey. All candidates for Local 701 office were unopposed this year except for District 4 in Eastern Oregon, where Raymond Akers outpolled Bobby Lara for the seat that was held by Terry Casey, who didn’t seek reelection.
Headquartered in Gladstone, Oregon, Local 701 represents about 3,800 members in a jurisdiction that covers Oregon and Southwest Washington. They operate heavy equipment in building and road construction and work as stationary engineers who operate and maintain building equipment.
Anderson first won election as business manager in 2016. Since then, the local built a state-of-the-art training center in Canby, built up its pension plan, more than doubled its treasury, and grew its membership by more than 400. Anderson is proud of all that, but insists on crediting the staff he oversees.
In the months to come, Anderson said his focus will be on the big contracts with AGC and crane owners, which expire at the end of 2025
