$599 is a sweet reward. $5,000 is even better. Over a catered dinner May 2 at McMenamin’s Kennedy School in Portland, Floor Coverers Local 1236 celebrated members’ efforts to be the best in their industry. Members who completed 24 hours of safety and skill advancement training over the previous 12 months were honored with the dinner for two, a bucket of swag, a check for $599, and a raffle ticket for even bigger awards. Four members won guillotine cutters or drill sets donated by the toolmaker Milwaukee. And three members won the night’s grand prizes: $2,500 awards for Adam Daugherty and Tommy Ota and $5,000 for Rodrigo Morales-Corona. The other awardees honored at the banquet were Jackson Aho, Matthew Findley, Andrew Sparks, Andrew Booth, Kyle West, Roberto Mendez-Luna, Kenneth Ward, Edgar Arreguin, Edgar Diaz, Rogelio Ramirez, Brent Tompkins, and David Rowden.
Local 1236 has been holding the annual STAR banquet since 2010, when members approved a 15-cent-an-hour contribution to pay for the prizes and the training that make up the STAR program. STAR stands for Safety Training Awards Recognition.
Business representative Dave Winkler said he hopes more members will take part in the program in the coming years.
