A “SMART” business decision

Want to grow your business? Sign on with the union.

That’s the decision self-employed sheet metal contractor Clint Ochampaugh reached last month. Ochampaugh’s company, Action Air Heating and Air Conditioning, had been struggling to keep up with all the HVAC work coming his way in the Salem and Portland area. By becoming a signatory contractor with International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) Local 16, he gets access to the highest-skilled employees in the industry through its hiring hall, and can scale up or down as bigger projects begin and end.

The deal was clinched last month at the Local 16 hall in Portland.
