Unions and contractors ready for Safe from Hate

Portland-area construction unions, general contractors, and subcontractors are getting ready to join an industry-wide effort to make workplace culture more welcoming to people of color and women workers.

Following a May 2020 incident in which a noose was found on a downtown Portland construction site, the Metropolitan Alliance for Workforce Equity (MAWE) is gathering signatures on a “Safe From Hate” pledge. The pledge commits signers to enforce a zero-tolerance policy for hostile workplace behavior and to implement positive jobsite culture trainings.

Leaders of construction unions and businesses will meet to talk about action steps at an Oct. 1 online summit.
