In-store bakery workers and cake decorators at Oregon and Washington Safeway and Albertsons stores are having trouble getting an acceptable union contract after roughly a year of bargaining. Portland-based Bakers Local 114 is calling for the same raises the company gave to grocery workers who are members of UFCW Local 555, but thus far the company has declined, and it’s meanwhile proposing to increase the cost of medical coverage.
Local 114 is calling on supporters to sign an online petition asking the company to negotiate in good faith and pay employees a living wage.
