Disney is set to pay $233 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over non-payment of a local minimum wage.
The lawsuit stems from a law approved by voters in Anaheim in 2018 that required businesses receiving tax subsidies from the city to pay resort workers at least $15 an hour, annually adjusted for inflation. Disney said the law didn’t apply to it, and continued paying less than the minimum to some of its own employees and to employees of contractor Sodexo — 51,478 workers in all — until 2023, when it raised wages above the minimum.
The settlement includes a $17.5 million civil penalty, $35 million in attorney fees, and a remainder that amounts to just under $3,500 per worker on average.
