Members of a bargaining unit of about 1,100 City of Portland workers represented by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 189 ratified a new three-year contract in a vote ending Feb. 23. With 80% of members voting, 93% supported ratifying the contract, AFSCME Local 189 President Rob Martineau said.

The new contract provides annual inflation-based cost of living adjustments plus overall wage increases totaling at least 3% over the three-year contract term, with larger increases for some classifications. Workers will see bigger pay increases if they currently make less than equivalent positions represented by the Laborers Local 483 or less than $27.04 per hour. The contract also adds three personal leave days a year for employees who are required to work fully in-person, increases the bonus pay for working graveyard shifts from $2.25 to $3.50 per hour, and adds a 2% longevity pay step for 10-year employees.

Portland City Council will vote March 19 to ratify the contract.
