Lee Worley, a member of Portland-based Iron Workers Local 29, has been appointed by Labor Secretary Thomas Perez to serve as a labor representative on the national Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (ACA).
The appointment was effective Aug. 1 and runs through July 31, 2018.
The ACA provides advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Labor on matters facing the Registered Apprenticeship System. The committee is composed of 27 to 30 individuals representing employers, labor unions, and members of the public.
Worley, 53, is the executive director of apprenticeship training for the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers. He was appointed to that post in 2011.
Prior to that he served for two years as the administrator of the Portland-based Pacific Northwest Ironworkers Trusts, and he was apprenticeship coordinator for Local 29’s and Local 516’s joint apprenticeship training committee for 13 years.
In tapping Worley, Perez said: “I continue to rely on the ACA for advice and recommendations on a variety of apprenticeship matters. …“Your leadership and expertise on matters impacting registered apprenticeship and workforce development are well established. Your service on the ACA will be highly beneficial.”
Perez said his immediate priorities include advancing President Obama’s goals around the ApprenticeshipUSA Initiative, such as promoting greater public awareness of the benefits of apprenticeship training, and expanding registered apprenticeship into new industries and occupations.
A 25-year member of Local 29, Worley relocated to Washington, D.C., earlier this year.
