It’s the only union award ceremony streamed live on Netflix: On March 1, SAG-AFTRA presented its 32nd annual Actor Awards, emceed by Kristen Bell. In their acceptance remarks, honorees celebrate their craft and thank their mentors. Now and then they put in a plug for union solidarity too.
Taking the award stage for the first time since his election last September, SAG-AFTRA president Sean Astin name-checked fellow film and TV unions WGA, DGA, AFM, IATSE, and the Teamsters.
“Our labor solidarity carried us through a very hard time,” Astin said. That’s a reference to the historic 118-day strike that shut the industry down in 2023. The resulting contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers expires this year on June 30, 2026.
Astin — best known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and Goonies— laid out the stakes: “What we are doing is giving our members a fighting chance to provide for themselves and for their families and allow us all to work in an environment that respects our dignity and the lives and health of our colleagues.”
