Members of AFSCME Local 189 who work in the City of Portland Auditor’s Office ratified a new collective bargaining agreement March 16 — after 11 months of bargaining.
The contract covers 30 auditors and administrative support staff. They conduct performance audits of city services, manage the city’s Fraud Hotline, oversee city elections, and manage city records.
Under the agreement, each July 1 they’ll get 1% across-the-board wage increases plus cost-of-living adjustments based on inflation. They’ll also get an immediate 2.4% cost-of-living increase that is retroactive to the July 1, 2025, expiration of their first contract. Auditor’s office workers first unionized in March 2021 but didn’t get a first agreement until June 2023 with the help of City Auditor Simone Rede, their boss.
The new contract also includes a $3,000 ratification bonus. And it adds seniority rights in the event of layoffs starting January 2027. That will be too late for two auditor’s office workers who are currently slated for potential layoff in another tough budget year for the city.
The new agreement runs through the end of 2028.
