In spite of a national Carpenters union directive saying Carpenters locals couldn’t send members to a popular national conference known as Tradeswomen Build Nations, this year’s conference in Chicago Sept. 19-21 reported registrations from 104 union carpenters, who paid their own way to Chicago, in some cases with help from women workers in other trades.
Attendees from other trades unions celebrated their arrival, which came after the United Brotherhood of Carpenters phased out its longstanding “Sisters in the Brotherhood” chapters.
The union said it took that action in response to Trump administration executive orders against diversity, equity, and inclusion.
