Operating Engineers Local 701 may have some talented golfers in its roster. A foursome including Nate Stokes, Scott Anderson, Jack Brodsky, and Josh Johnston took first place in the afternoon shotgun competition Sept. 29 as part of the 35th annual BULL Session charity golf tournament.
The BULL in BULL Session stands for Business, Union, and Labor Leaders. Local union and employer leaders sometimes partner and sometimes butt heads, but once a year they come together for a golf tournament and dinner that in its 35 years have raised over $7.9 million for local charities.
This year’s title sponsors were US Bank and NECA-IBEW Local 48. The electrical employer group and union were also one of the three $10,000 paddle raises at the Sept. 27 dinner. The other two were Operating Engineers Local 701 and the Oregon-Columbia Chapter of Associated General Contractors (AGC).
Since 2019, the BULL Session tournament and dinner have been organized by Peter Jacobsen Sports, an event management company founded by professional golfer Peter Jacobsen, a Portland native. Since 2005, the company has organized hundreds of charity golf events around the country.
Dinner this year was at the Hyatt Regency Portland at the Convention Center and was emceed by KGW anchor Drew Carney.
The tournament was held at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora. Behind the first place win by Local 701, second place went to Paramount Hotels, and third place went to union-signatory EC Electric. The morning shotgun competition resulted in first place win for Marsh McLennan Insurance Agency, second place for the Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association, and third place for Glacier NW, a ready-mix concrete supplier. The tournament drew 208 participants in all, and the dinner was attended by about 250.
Final proceeds from this year’s event won’t be tallied until later this month. They’ll go to support Albertina Kerr’s Crisis Psychiatric Care Unit, Gales Creek Camp Foundation, March of Dimes, Shriners Hospital for Children – Portland, Swindells Resource Center of Providence Children’s Health Foundation, and Wheel to Walk Foundation.
