Nearly 250 security guards who work at Multnomah County libraries, clinics, shelters, and offices unionized with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 49, the union announced March 10.
The security officers work for Inter-Con Security Systems, which started a five-year, $40 million contract with Multnomah County last year. Unarmed, they’re often the first responders to any emergency on Multnomah County property, the union said.
Workers make around $23 to $25 per hour, Local 49 spokesperson Alan Dubinsky said.
Inter-Con agreed to recognize the union after a supermajority of members said they wanted to join Local 49 in a card-check process completed Feb. 24. Inter-Con is based in California and employs more than 25,000 security personnel around the world.
