More than 360 workers join existing union at Central City Concern

Votes tallied Sept. 12 showed a partial win for the union effort at Portland homeless nonprofit Central City Concern. Rules of the National Labor Relations Board require separate votes for “professional” and “nonprofessional” employees. Among professional employees, for now anyway, the union effort fell short, with a 25-41 vote in favor of unionizing. But the union won 104-77 among the nonprofessionals. The latter result brings 366 new members into AFSCME Local 88 (AFSCME stands for American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees). They join an existing unit of about 360 workers at Central City Concern who are already represented by Local 88.

The newly unionized unit includes administrative assistants, employment and housing specialists, case managers, and others. The unit remaining non-union includes doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and accountants.

  1. So…. The salaried employees are all onboard with the company while the hourly employees are all about union…. We will see Mendenhall et al in court soon. This rampant corruption and abuse of taxpayer dollar needs to stop. There are a number of tremendous non-profits that actually impact those in need in Portland. Central City Concern is a real estate monopoly that has abused and manipulated this city far too long!! It’s time to petition to stop all federal and tax payer funds to CCC.
