Rite Aid pharmacy techs form independent union

A group of 10 pharmacy technicians at a Corvallis Rite Aid store will soon vote on whether to affiliate with a new labor organization.

The Pharmacy Technicians of Rite Aid Union on Nov. 21 filed paperwork with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), seeking a union election. The proposed bargaining unit covers all pharmacy technicians at Rite Aid, at 2080 NW 9th St. in Corvallis. Pharmacy technicians work alongside pharmacists, helping to prepare and distribute prescriptions to customers.

The NLRB has set an in-person election for Jan. 19, 2023 at the Corvallis store.

The Corvallis store would apparently be the only Rite Aid with union representation in Oregon, although the stores are widely unionized in Washington and California. In 1997, a year after Pennsylvania-headquartered Rite Aid entered Oregon by acquiring Thrifty PayLess, United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 555 said union organizers were being escorted off Rite Aid premises. UFCW called for a boycott of Rite Aid in Oregon at the time.
