Travis Hopkins, 49, was elected unopposed as business agent and financial secretary of Roofers Local 49 last month. He succeeds Russ Garnett, who retired. Hopkins will serve at least through July 2024, the remainder of Garnett’s term.
Local 49 represents 620 roofers and waterproofers in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Hopkins grew up in the Medford area, and joined the local when he moved to the Portland area in 1996, following his father Darrell Hopkins into the trade. He got involved in the local, serving on the joint apprenticeship training committee and health and welfare trust. For the last five years he worked full-time for the local as an organizer and field rep.
On his agenda: hiring a new organizer, growing the workforce, and securing work in the renewable sector.
