Honoring union screen actors, in Hollywood and at home

Share

A movie still signed by Jack Nicholson was one of 40 auction prizes at the 2019 SAG Awards watch party at the Lake Theater in Lake Oswego. This year’s watch party raised funds for Portland local SAG-AFTRA President Robert Blanche, who’s fighting for his life after a double lung transplant. Over 100 people attended, and raised $1,470, bringing the total raised to $9,000.

Unlike the better-known Oscars, the annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are for acting only, honor both film and TV, and include awards for entire casts as well as individuals. Honorees are chosen by their fellow union members. Top honors at this year’s event were presented as part of a live broadcast Jan. 27 on TNT.

Robert Blanche

In Portland, local SAG-AFTRA members and their union friends and family gathered at the Lake Theater in Lake Oswego for a special version of their annual SAG Awards Watch party. This year’s event doubled as a fundraiser for a beloved figure in the local, president Robert Blanche, who may be best known publicly for his role as Sergeant Franco in the TV show Grimm. Blanche is fighting to recover from complications of a double lung transplant, and union members are raising funds to help support his wife and young children while he is unable to work. [See photos from the event here.]

The campaign is ongoing and runs through Valentine’s Day. Donations can be made online here
