The union that is widely known as the Iron Workers is shortening its official name. For over a century, it has formally been known as the “International Association Of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental And Reinforcing Iron Workers.” But at its most recent convention Aug. 31 to Sept. 4 in Chicago, local union delegates approved a resolution shortening that to “International Association of Iron Workers.”
Delegates voted to change the name because the previous title no longer reflected the full scope of work performed by today’s members, the union said in a statement emailed to the Labor Press: “Over the years, our jurisdiction has expanded far beyond the bridge, structural, ornamental, and reinforcing sectors referenced in our historical name and now encompasses a wide range of specialty work across the United States and Canada. We recognized that a simpler, more inclusive name better represents all members while providing a clearer and more recognizable identity for our union.”
