Back in June 2023, a campaign by SEIU Local 49 to unionize 1,113 hospital support workers at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford failed, by just four votes, 446-440. Local 49 had majority support when it asked the National Labor Relations Board to hold the vote. What happened after that? Asante Rogue went rogue, violating labor law by threatening and discriminating against union supporters, according to a later investigation by the NLRB. On Jan. 6, a regional director of the NLRB filed a complaint against Asante seeking a court order overturning the election loss and requiring the hospital to recognize the union and bargain in good faith.
