Staff reporter Mallory Gruben has left the Northwest Labor Press for a new position as an organizer for her union, Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 11. During her 15 months at the Labor Press, Gruben’s reporting resulted in 247 published articles totaling 134,000 words. That included stories on anti-union lawbreaking at Starbucks, women in the trades, and a report on a wave of payroll software “glitches” that cut into workers paychecks at Fred Meyer, Providence Health, and Multnomah County. Gruben came to the Labor Press from The Daily Herald in Everett, Washington, where she was part of a campaign to unionize with the NewsGuild. Now she’ll devote herself full-time to union organizing.
The Northwest Labor Press is pleased to welcome Grant Stringer as our new staff reporter. Stringer, 28, has written for The Oregonian, Willamette Week, Oregon Capital Chronicle, Washington Post, and The Guardian, and worked as staff reporter at the Sentinel Colorado, a weekly community newspaper.
