A union campaign at a maker of cannabis gummies went down to defeat April 4. With all but one of 35 eligible workers casting ballots, the vote was 12-22 for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555. The company, Northwest Confections LLC, does business as Wyld, and it’s one of the biggest players in its category, doing business in 12 states plus Canada.
Wyld bills itself as America’s best-selling cannabis gummy brand. Workers manufacture its products at Emmert International Business Park, 11773 SE Highway 212, Suite 111, Clackamas.
In its National Labor Relations Board proceedings, the company was represented by the noted anti-union law firm Littler Mendelson. And yet it’s accused of violating federal labor law in its effort to oppose unionization. In charges filed April 2 with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Local 555 says the company fired a union supporter.
If the NLRB agrees the worker was fired unlawfully, and Local 555 can prove it had majority support when it requested the union election, the NLRB could overturn the results of the election and order Wyld to bargain with the union.
