A Washington farmworker union leader is being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a processing center in Tacoma.

Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez, 25, is an organizer with Familias Unidas por la Justicia, an independent union for farmworkers in the Skagit Valley north of Seattle. He was arrested by ICE agents March 25.

The Seattle Times reported that Juarez had worked in Washington as a berry picker since he was 14 and had led a farmworker delegation to the state legislature in February.

Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, is encouraging supporters to contribute to Juarez’ legal defense fund at foodjustice.org/donate-1
