It was a test of talents. On March 29, seven apprentices gathered at the Northeast Portland training center of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 for a friendly skills competition judged by instructors and members of the joint apprenticeship training committee. As friends, family members, and instructors watched, they spent the morning constructing temporary brick, tile, and cinder block arrangements.
Winners were:
- Brick Noah Martell
- PCC (Pointer, Cleaner, Caulker) Cristian Urenda
- Tile Edgar Reyna Banuelos
Besides bragging rights, winners received high-quality tools of their trade as prizes. And they’ll compete in the union’s Western States Apprenticeship Contest May 9-10 in Las Vegas. If they win there, they’ll go to the International Apprenticeship Contest Sept 26-27 in Detroit.
