The new committee will be chaired by longtime labor ally Loretta Smith.
Portland’s new city council has established a Labor and Workforce Development Committee as one of eight policy committees.
Each committee will develop and recommend legislation for the full city council to vote on and oversee city bureaus and programs. Committee meetings will be the primary place for public input.
The Labor and Workforce Development Committee will cover subjects like labor policies and spending on internships, apprenticeships, and other job training programs both for city employees and Portland at large.
Councilor Loretta Smith, who represents District 1 (east Portland), is the chair of the committee, while Councilor Mitch Green, District 4 (west side and part of southeast) is vice-chair. Councilors Jamie Dunphy, of District 1; Steve Novick, of District 3 (southeast); and Sameer Kanal, of District 2 (north/northeast) round out the five-member committee.
