Workers killed on the job

An estimated 5,283 U.S. workers died of injuries on the job in 2023, according to the latest report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, released Dec. 19. That’s down 3.7% from 2022.

Transportation accidents were the most frequent cause of workplace fatalities, 36.8% of the total. Homicides (458 of them) accounted for 8.7% of workplace fatalities. 

Construction was the industry with the most fatalities, with 1,075 fatalities, and falls, slips and trips accounted for 421 of those. The transportation and warehousing sector had the second most fatalities (930).

Overall, there were 3.5 fatalities for every 100,000 full-time equivalent workers in 2023
