An ABC Roofing employee and member of Roofers Local 49 may be the best in the West. Fourth year apprentice Jose Parra Pineda took first place in the advanced level at the Western Regional Roofers and Waterproofers 2024 Apprenticeship Competition. The event was held Nov. 2 at the Pierce County Roofers JATC Training Facility in Lakewood, Washington (just south of Tacoma).

Participants from six union locals competed in single ply, coatings, torchdown, shingles, an obstacle course, and a math test with trade specific math. Fellow Local 49 members Rogelio Gutierez and Julian Zavala also competed, and Gutierez took second place in the intermediate category.

Parra Pineda and other winners received a backpack full of tools, and gift cards. His win means he’ll go on to compete in St. Paul, Minnesota May 16, 2025, at the national apprentice competition.
