Public approval of unions is back up to 70% after dipping to 67% in 2023, according to the most recent annual poll by Gallup. That continues a trend of recent years showing the highest levels of union approval since the 1960s. And respondents who say they disapprove of unions is down to 23%, the lowest since 1967.
Approval was slightly higher among women (73%) than men (67%), and among non-white respondents (75%) than white respondents (68%). Also continuing trends, union approval was highest among those age 18-34 (77%) and lowest among those 55 and over (66%). And it was higher among college grads (75%) than those with no college education (65%).
Among those identified as Democrats, 94% said they approve of unions; that compared to 49% of those who said they were Republicans.
The results come from an Aug. 1-20 survey of a statistical sample of 1,015 Americans.
