Labor Day picnics

The first Monday of every September is labor’s holiday, celebrated by union members, families, and allies. Below are union picnics in Oregon and Washington on Monday, Sept. 2.


Portland area

  • WHEN 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • WHERE Clackamas County Fairgrounds, 694 NE Fourth Ave., Canby, Oregon
  • SPONSOR Northwest Oregon Labor Council
  • WHAT TO EXPECT This year’s event is a combination of picnic and craft fair, with food by McKillip’s Catering, live country/blues music by the Dan Kaufman Band, union-made craft items for sale, plus activities for kids and a chance to meet and hear from pro-labor candidates and elected leaders.
  • RSVP Lunch offerings this year include chicken, hot dogs, veggie dogs, baked beans, potato salad, chips, soda and ice cream. But day-of-event meal tickets will be severely limited, so unless your union is sponsoring you, be sure to sign up ASAP here.

Southwest Washington

  • WHEN 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • WHERE Haydu Park, 253 Kalama River Rd., Kalama, Washington
  • SPONSORS Southwest Washington Central Labor Council and Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Central Labor Council
  • WHAT TO EXPECT Barbecue (and vegetarian options), fun for the kids, and raffles. 
  • TIPS There’s not a lot of shade in Haydu Park, so it’s recommended you bring sunscreen and shade if you need it (Popup tents are fine but with weights, no stakes.) Also bring chairs, tables, and blankets. No animals allowed in the park.

Central Oregon

  • WHEN 12 to 3 p.m.
  • WHERE Alpenglow Park, 61049 SE 15th St., Bend, Oregon
  • SPONSOR Central Oregon Labor Chapter
  • WHAT TO EXPECT Food from 12-1 p.m., speeches from labor leaders and elected officials from 1 to 2 p.m., and live music from 12-1 and 2-3 p.m.

  • WHERE Splash Pad Picnic Shelter, 6100 Thurston Rd., Springfield, Oregon

  • WHAT TO EXPECT Hamburgers, hot dogs, pop, and water; live music; family fun; and door prizes.
