A union picnic for the ages

How big was IBEW Local 48’s member appreciation picnic this year? It’s almost hard to describe. Event organizer Tracey Powers estimates over 4,000 union electricians and family members attended the five-hour event July 14. It was so many that the overflow parking at the nearby Carpenters union training center also overflowed.

Within an hour of the event’s start, lines of attendees were carting out bags of bingo prizes. Families also lined up for portraits in a zany photo booth. Dancing occasionally broke out.

And kids of all ages had an extraordinary variety of fun activities to choose from, from carnival rides like the Pirate’s Revenge and Super Sonic (above) to a zip line, a superslide,  a bungee trampoline, an obstacle course, mini-golf, a dunk tank, and a rock climbing wall. Not to mention the bubble machine, cornhole, giant Jenga and Connect Four games, and axe throwing (no, not the sharp metal ones).

Lunch was burgers, hot dogs, and all the fixings, plus watermelons, beer, soda, and bottled water to wash it down, and ice cream for dessert.
