Union Guide to the 2022 General Election

Share

There’s a lot at stake in this November’s elections, including which party will control Congress, and who will be Oregon’s next governor and labor commissioner. As ever, ballots are long. This union-focused ballot guide tries to keep it simple: It lists only those candidates who have at least one labor organization endorsing them—AND who have opponents on the ballot. Candidates and measures are listed in the order you’ll find them on the ballot. Unions didn’t take a position on every measure or candidate race. And sometimes, unions didn’t agree. Following each name is a list of union endorsers and a link to the campaign website, if they have one. Processes vary, but collectively, the union endorsements in this guide represent thousands of hours of effort by union volunteers, officers and staff interviewing and evaluating the choices. [Acronyms are in the legend below.]

NOTE: Ballots must be received or postmarked by Tuesday, Nov. 8.

FEDERAL OFFICES

U.S. SENATOR

Ron Wyden (D) is seeking a sixth six-year term. Although he’s sparred with labor over free trade agreements and has faced progressive challengers in the past, he remains a key ally for organized labor and holds a 91% lifetime voting score from the AFL-CIO. He faces Jo Rae Perkins, a believer in the QAnon conspiracy. AFL-CIO, AFT, ATU, IBEW, IBT, IW 29, OEA, ONA, OSEA, SEIU, UBC StandTallForAmerica.com

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE

Congressional District 1 (Portland/NW Oregon)

Suzanne Bonamici (D) is seeking re-election to the seat she’s held since 2012. Although she voted to fast-track free trade agreements in 2015, she’s otherwise been a reliable supporter of labor priorities, and she was a co-sponsor of the PRO (Protecting the Right to Organize) Act in 2019 and 2021. She faces Republican Christopher Mann. AFL-CIO, AFT, IBT, IUPAT, IW 29, LiUNA, OEA, OFNHP, ONA, OSEA, SEIU, UBC, UFCW, WFP BonamiciForCongress.com

Earl Blumenauer (D) is running for re-election for the seat he’s held since 1996. He holds a 100% voting score for 2021 and a 95% score across his time in office, according to the AFL-CIO. Like other pro-labor lawmakers, one notable departure was his vote to fast-track free trade agreements in 2015. AFL-CIO, AFT, IBEW, IBT, IW 29, SEIU, OEA, ONA, OSEA, UBC EarlBlumenauer.com

Congressional District 4 (Lane County/Southern Coast)

Few candidates have worked harder than Hoyle to establish a strong relationship with the state’s unions. She faces Republican Alek Skarlatos, who previously challenged DeFazio. Skarlatos once worked for the fanatically anti-union group Freedom Foundation, which regularly sends unsolicited mailings to public employees encouraging them to stop paying union dues. Betsy Johnson (I) was a Democrat when she served as state senator from Clatskanie, but voted against her party more than any other Senate Democrat, including frequent votes against labor-backed legislation, even the bill to raise the minimum wage. Clerk

TIME’s UP for serial flubber Sheri Hall

Catherine McMullen is challenging longtime county clerk Sherry Hall. Hall has been in office 20 years, and just can’t seem to get the job right. Under her watch, Clackamas County elections have been afflicted by a seemingly endless series of mishaps, each costing taxpayer dollars to correct, and undermining voter confidence in the elections process. The latest: In West Linn, an election for two city council members will have to be postponed because ballots wrongly instruct voters to pick one candidate instead of two; a special election will have to be held in March 2023 to decide the race. That follows her May 2022 primary foulup, when a bad print job necessitated hand counting and weeks of delay in nationally watched election results. But McMullen isn’t just a replacement to Hall; she’s currently a highly competent and experienced elections administrator for Multnomah County, and is active in her union, AFSCME Local 88.
