John Clatworthy, president of Portland-based International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 28, died Sept. 9. He was 73.
A graduate of the University of Oregon School of Music, Clatworthy began working with Local 28 in March 1975. He held numerous positions in the union, and was serving as president at the time of his death.
John Edward Clatworthy was born and raised in Fresno, California, and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1965. He had a love of music and theater. He played the French horn and participated in many theater groups throughout his life.
After graduating from U of O he went on to get his teaching certificate from Portland State University and taught at Villa St Rose.
Over the years he had worked for Portland Opera as their production electrician.
He had a love for sailing and had been a member of both Willamette Sailing Club and Rose City Yacht Club.
Clatworthy was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Wanda Clatworthy. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Donna, and daughter, Valerie.
A virtual memorial service is being planned through First Congregational Church of Portland. The date for this service has yet to be announced.

RIP John Clatworthy, good colleague and friend. John served as the IATSE rep to the Technical Theatre Training Advisory Board for CTE programs at MHCC, Centennial High School and David Douglas High School. John, we will miss you!
