Flight attendants opose on-board insecticides
On certain international flights, pilots, passengers, and flight attendants spend up to 16 hours in what amounts to a tin can full of pesticide.

Portland schools' cafeteria workers merge with SEIU Local 503
SEIU Local 140 lost about half its members in August 2002 when the school district replaced its 300 in-house custodians with a private contractor, Portland Habilitation Services. In January, the international union ordered a merger, with details to go before Local 140 members for approval.

Oregonians remember the 70 workers killed on the job in 2003
More than 100 people mourned the loss of 70 workers killed in Oregon last year and vowed to fight to make workplaces safer for all workers. Among those in attendance were family members of six workers killed on the job. As the name of each person killed in Oregon in 2003 was read, a flag was raised and a bell tolled in their memory.

When Portland Public Schools sold the broadcast license for classical music station KBPS-FM to a private foundation last December, the new owners took the view that the purchase didn’t come with an obligation to recognize the previously existing union.
