Portland
schools' cafeteria workers merge with SEIU Local 503
SEIU Local 140 lost about half its members in August 2002 when the school
district replaced its 300 in-house custodians with a private contractor,
Portland Habilitation Services. In January, the international union ordered
a merger, with details to go before Local 140 members for approval.
Oregonians
remember the 70 workers killed on the job in 2003
More than
100 people mourned the loss of 70 workers killed in Oregon last year and
vowed to fight to make workplaces safer for all workers. Among those in
attendance were family members of six workers killed on the job. As the
name of each person killed in Oregon in 2003 was read, a flag was raised
and a bell tolled in their memory.
Employees
at KBPS radio station vote for IBEW Local 48
When Portland Public Schools sold the broadcast license for classical
music station KBPS-FM to a private foundation last December, the new owners
took the view that the purchase didn’t come with an obligation to
recognize the previously existing union. On April 23, the station’s
workers made their position clearer.
