Local Workers Memorial Day observances

Each year, to honor workers who died on the job—and recommit to fighting for on-the-job safety—state and local labor councils of the AFL-CIO hold Workers Memorial Day observances. Workers’ Memorial Day began in 1989 when the national AFL-CIO declared April 28 as a day to honor working people killed on the job every year. April 28 was chosen because it’s the anniversary of the date the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect, but it’s since been recognized and promoted around the world by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
