Garry Goodwin, a longtime member, officer, and training coordinator for the Carpenters Union, passed away Nov. 18 at age 87.

Goodwin was director of instruction for the Oregon-Washington Carpenters-Employers Apprenticeship & Training Trust from 1986 to October 1993, when he retired at age 62. Prior to that he served as the elected president of Local 1020 and later of its successor, Local 247. He was an elected business representative and later executive secretary-treasurer of the Portland District Council of Carpenters, which he served until its merger into the now defunct Oregon State District Council of Carpenters.

Garry Paul Goodwin was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Oakland, California. After graduating from Alameda High School, he attended the University of Berkley in California before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, where he was stationed in England.

He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn English, in 1952.

Following his military discharge in 1954, he entered the Carpenters apprenticeship program in Martinez, California. In 1967 he moved his wife and four children to Portland, where he joined Local 1020.

His father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and two uncles were all Carpenters. His father, Bernie, was a financial secretary and business agent for Local 1020.

Goodwin is survived by a son; two daughters; seven grandchildren, and soon to be 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter; and sister.

Goodwin was buried Dec. 5 with full military honors at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

There will be a Celebration of Life Jan. 18, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Courtyard Fountains Retirement, 1545 SE 223rd Ave., Gresham.
