Chris Groener, a union representative of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, has been appointed to the Clackamas Community College Board of Education. He succeeds longtime board member Chuck Clemans, who died in a car accident in December. The position comes up for election in 2013, and Groener says he will run.

Groener, 41, resides in Oregon City. He attended Clackamas Community College for two years before transferring to Portland State University, where he was president of Associated Students. He has worked at Local 555 for two years. Prior to that he was an internal organizer for the Service Employees International Union.

Groener also currently serves on the Oregon City Planning Commission, but he said he plans to resign from that board shortly.

Groener is the son of Ralph Groener, a lobbyist for Oregon AFSCME Council 75 and a CCC board member in the 1970s who went on serve in the Oregon Legislature and on the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners.
