Iron Workers Local 516 elects new officers


Portland-based Iron Workers Shopmen’s Local 516 announced results from its recent union election.

Michael Lappier, 46, of Universal Structures Inc. (USI), defeated incumbent Bruce Bunnell for the full-time paid position of financial secretary-treasurer/business agent. Bunnell, 64, will retire.

Lappier has been a member of Local 516 for 17 years. He has not held any elected positions with the union.

Richard Padilla Jr. of Fought & Company was re-elected president; Horace “Sonny” Hopkins of USI was elected vice president; John Grey of USI was elected recording secretary; David Payne of the Western Group was tapped as sergeant-at-arms, and Gordon Eckert of Mercer Industries was elected conductor.

Elected to the union’s Executive Board were Bill Snegirev of USI, William Stinde of Oregon Iron Works, Rex Thornton and Michael Hill of Pella Vinyl, and Cecil Pflegl of Fought & Co.

Trustees elected were Jon Smitherman and Duane Blackmore of USI, and Robin Wright of Oregon Iron Works.

Lappier, Hopkins and Tony Butkovich Jr. of USI were elected delegates to the Iron Workers District Council.

Officers were installed July 28.

Terms are for three years.
