IBEW Local 48 elects Mitchell as business manager


Barry Mitchell defeated incumbent Grant Zadow of Portland-based Electrical Workers Local 48 for the post of business manager/financial secretary. The vote was 977 to 486 in mail balloting counted June 24.

Zadow was appointed business manager in January 2002 after serving for several years as assistant to the business manager. Prior to that, Zadow was a business representative in the field for seven years.

Mitchell has been a member of Local 48 since January 1990. He transferred from IBEW Local 768 in Kalispell, Montana, where he served as a business representative in the early ‘80s. He joined the union in 1972 as an apprentice.

Local 48 represents approximately 3,700 members who work as construction and industrial electricians, and sound and communications electricians.

In other elections for Local 48 offices, Bruce Zimmerman defeated Felix Ramos for president of the local by a vote of 874 to 587. The seat was open, as incumbent Robert Palandech did not seek re-election.

Mike Evans ran unopposed for vice president; John Sargent defeated Tim Moxley 841 to 451 for treasurer; and Eric Hayes defeated Dennis Ward 791 to 493 for recording secretary.

Elected to the local’s Executive Board were Nancy A. Cary, Paul Behrman, Jake Harding, Greg Nordin, Philip A. Parker and John Wilson. The aforementioned were the top six vote-getters out of 15 candidates.

Cary, Nordine, Wilson, Parker, Clif Davis, Joe Esmonde, Eric Hays and Steve Shiprack were elected delegates to the 37th International Convention. Eighteen members ran for delegate seats. Elected to the examining board were Daniel Fisher, Donovan Koch and John McCamish.

New officers and board members will be sworn in July 28. Terms are for three years.
