'Union' grocers opening new stores non-union

Since the 1994 retail strike by members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 at Fred Meyer in Portland and Vancouver, the major unionized food retailers (Freddy's, Albertson's and Safeway) have embarked on an aggressive campaign to open all new locations non-union, charged Local 555 President Gene Pronovost.

"They have refused to give union organizers access to the employees working in these stores, often threatening arrest if we attempt to go on the parking lot, or even in the store to shop," Pronovost said. Local 555 has filed unfair labor practice complaints on several occasions and has prevailed at four different arbitration hearings, but the grocers continue their anti-union efforts, "including implementing wages, vacation and sick leave benefits superior to those in the union contracts," Pronovost said.

Local 555 has released a list of locations where these "union" grocery employers are operating non-union grocery departments. The union encourages union members not to patronize these non-union grocers.
