Local 290 member has niche product for Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders

VANCOUVER, WA -- Harley-Davidson motorcycle fans may want to get to know Doug Miller a little better.

The member of the United Association of Plumbers and Fitters Local 290 in Tualatin makes special beveled-edge aluminum derby covers, point covers and handlebar clamps for the Harleys which are designed with union logos and insignias.

"The electricians got me started," said Miller from his shop in Vancouver, Wash.

He used Local 48's custom-designed logo on a point cover for a Harley rider and member of Local 48. It was such a big hit among co-workers (and non-riders) that 39 more were ordered -- some for tool boxes and as paperweights, he said.

Miller has made a half-dozen derby covers for Harley riders who are members of Local 290. The intricate United Association design is a difficult one, so the cost is high at $125.

"It's a real unique and personalized piece for the bike and the guys really love 'em," said Miller, noting that he still has two UA derby covers for sale at his shop.
